CaMLA Writing Test

The CaMLA Writing Test is an easy way to assess general writing ability at the high beginner through low advanced (CEFR A2–C1) levels. Its two-task design gives you meaningful results about the written English proficiency of your test takers. It takes just 45 minutes and covers high-beginner to low-advanced levels, all in a single test.

How to use the CaMLA Writing Test

The purpose of the CaMLA Writing Test is to evaluate the test taker’s ability to write in English. The test is designed for language learners who range in ability from the high-beginner to low-advanced levels. The test taker’s performance is evaluated by a trained rater and the total score reflects the test taker’s general, overall writing proficiency in English.

Test Format and Administration

The CaMLA Writing Test consists of two separate tasks, which require test takers to produce written language at the sentence and paragraph levels and to produce a short essay.

  • Task 1: short responses on a related theme
    • relate a life experience
    • express an opinion about it
    • elaborate on the situation
  • Task 2: compare and contrast essay with supporting details

The CaMLA Writing Test can be administered in just 45 minutes.

Test Scoring

The writing examiner scores the test using the CaMLA Writing Test Rating Scale. The test package contains a reproducible score collection sheet, the rating scale, rater training materials, and detailed instructions on how to assess test takers’ responses. The test can be scored quickly and easily. It is possible to administer the test, award and calculate the scores, and report them back to test takers within one day.

The testing coordinator’s manual contains guidance on how to interpret CaMLA Writing Test scores. Scores can be used:

  • to place ESL/EFL learners into English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) courses
  • to show student progress throughout a course, and/or
  • as an exit test at the end of a period of instruction.

How do CaMLA Writing Test scores relate to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels?

The CaMLA Writing Test assesses written language proficiency from the high beginner to low advanced levels, targeting the A2 to C1 ability levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). For the purposes of this test, writing abilities include:

  • producing error-free writing that uses a wide variety of complex structures
  • producing a wide range of vocabulary, choosing words that suit the context, distinguishing shades of meaning, and avoiding repetition
  • using standard spelling and punctuation
  • presenting of ideas in a logical order, linking ideas, and the range and appropriateness of connective devices
  • completeness, relevance, and detail of the response

The CaMLA Writing Test package includes:
